The Value and Function of Each Vitamin and Mineral – Part 1

Over the past few months that I have been observing my clients’ lab work, I have noticed that the majority of us (both adults and children) are vitamin and mineral deficient. Vitamins and minerals are not usually produced by the body but need to be obtained from food or supplements. I felt it would be helpful to provide you with a brief synopsis of the value and function of each vitamin and mineral in the body. This will be a 2 part series.
Vitamin A
- Prevents skin challenges, such as acne, wrinkling and age spots.
- Strengthens the immune system, protecting the body from colds, flus and infections to kidney, bladder, and lungs.
- Maintains and repairs the mucus membranes in the lungs, throat, eyes and other areas.
Vitamin B Complex
- Improves memory, concentration, and learning capacity.
- Helps with stress, maintaining the health of the nerves.
- Helps maintain healthy sex hormones and fertility.
- Improves sleep patterns.
- Converts carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy.
- Improves stamina.
- Fights infections.
- Relieves eye fatigue and cataracts.
- Lowers cholesterol and improves circulation.
Vitamin C
- Protects us from pollution, prevents infections and improves immunity.
- Can reduce bad cholesterol and increase levels of good cholesterol.
- Prevents bruising and heals wounds and burns.
- Helps produce anti-stress hormones.
- Needed for more than 30 metabolic functions.
Vitamin D
- Helps with bone and tooth formation, muscle function and thyroid function.
- Assists with the absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus.
- Regulates heartbeat.
- Prevents and treats breast and colon cancer.
- Increases immunity.
Vitamin E
- This antioxidant helps prevent approximately 80 diseases.
- Slows down aging.
- Improves circulation.
- Repairs tissue.
- Helps prevent PMS.
- Reduces scarring.
- Lowers blood pressure.
- Helps prevent cataracts.
- Improves the health of skin and hair.
- Promotes healthy cell structure.
Molybdenum
- Helps us obtain what our bodies need from the air.
- Aids in bone growth and teeth strengthening.
Phosphorus
- Needed for blood clotting, tooth formation, growth and repair of cells, heart muscle contraction, normal heart rhythm and kidney function.
- Helps the body utilize vitamins and convert food to energy.
Silicon
- Helps in bone formation.
- Improves the health of skin, hair, nails, blood vessels and connective tissue.
- Keeps the arteries flexible.
- Helps prevent cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis.
- Inhibits aging.
- Improves the immune system.
If we are NOT eating a healthy diet and taking good quality supplements, it is impossible for our bodies to obtain the vitamins that perform these vital functions. Please stay tuned for my next blog, where I will outline the functions of the various minerals.
